THE HAT YOU WEAR

The Hat You Wear explores identity as something we wear, perform and construct. Through familiar objects and repeated gestures, the project questions how personal roles and cultural symbols shape the way we see ourselves and others.

The Hat You Wear is a video work exploring the roles we take on and the identities we construct around them. Through the repeated act of putting on and layering hats, identity becomes something performed, shaped and continuously transformed.

Below is a selection of studies and photographic experiments that preceded the final video work.

CONCRETE CAPS

The concrete caps extend The Hat You Wear from personal identity to the cultural symbols that shape it. Rooted in sportswear and consumer culture, the cap becomes a marker of belonging, status and identity.

Cast in concrete and displayed like products in a shop window, these familiar objects become heavy and almost monumental. Yet their eroding surfaces suggest that neither identities nor the cultures that shape them are permanent. What we wear, value and identify with is constantly changing, fading and being redefined.
